Frequently Asked Questions (no really!)

At these prices are the bikes reliable?
Our factory uses Japanese technology and is ISO 9001 approved. Our bikes are so reliable some have covered more than 100 000km - that's like going around the world more than twice! We even have an industry leading 2 year warranty - this is also transferrable which is great for resale value.
Do you keep spares?
Yes, a complete range for all of our models. Here are a few example prices:
  • espresso mirror: R75.00
  • enzo front fender: R220.00
  • enzo side cover: R120.00
  • hooter: R65.00
  • espresso chain: R220.00
Much less than our competitors!
Who handles servicing and repairs ?
We do, we have a fully equipped workshops at all our branches. We handle all servicing and repairs on the premises.
When should I have the first service done?
After travelling 300km, or within 3 months. The first service is the most important. It is during the first few hours of operation that the engine wears in and small amounts of metal debris are deposited into the oil. The oil works hard at this time and needs to be changed. Please make sure that you have the service done on time as it will affect your warranty.
What do services cost?
We keep the service price at the lowest cost in the market - just R 399 for the run-in 300km service and R449 for services every 2500km. The service on the 250cc monza is a bit higher at R499 per service due to the special oil that we use.
What is the recommended service interval?
Every 2500km or at least once a year. (The monza 250cc is 4000km due to the engine size and synthetic oils used.)
Why so often?
The key to keeping an engine this size in top shape is regular oil changes, this is vital.
Are your bikes available in different colours?
Yes, we normally have white, pearl black, sky blue, titanium silver and ferrari red. We also offer customisation of the seat covers at reasonable prices and it gives the bikes a great individualised look.
Do your bikes have a warranty?
Yes, 2 years or 20,000kms. Some of our competitors offer only 6 months or 5000km! Our warranty is the best in the market as we cover things like electrics and shocks - some things our competitors do not cover! Our warranty can also be transferred to the new owner should you sell your bike.
Are your bikes 2 strokes or 4 strokes?
All MotoMia bikes have 4 stroke engines. 4 stroke engines last longer than 2 stroke engines and use less fuel as they are lower revving. 4 stroke engines are better for the environment as they produce fewer emissions. They do not need extra oil to be added to the fuel mixture and so are easier to maintain. We must confess they don't provide quite the same performance.
Do your bikes have electric starters?
All MotoMia bikes have both electric starters and kick starts, the spitzer and monza have electric start only.
Can your bikes carry a passenger?
Yes, unless you or your passenger are bigger than the Hulk there is no problem.
Do you have finance available?
We offer finance from JD Group – one of South Africa’s biggest retail finance institutions. Come in and fill out the easy application forms and you should qualify! As an indication you will need to clear about R750 after all your monthly expenses to qualify.
Do you accept laybuys?
Yes, we accept laybuys. Come and talk to us and we'll set up a plan.
What is involved with registration and licensing?
To legally sell a bike we must charge for the registration paper and for micro-dotting (see below). Then for your convenience we can license the bike for a year and get you a license plate.
What do you charge in Cape Town?
We charge R899 (R199 for the registration paper + R200 for the micro-dotting + R500 for the licensing and number plate). If you live outside of Cape Town you will have to license the bike yourself and get your own license plate (and so we only charge R399).
What do you charge in Gauteng?
We charge R1,199 (R199 for the registration paper + R200 for the micro-dotting + R800 for the licensing and number plate). The reason it is more expensive than Cape Town is that there is no Unicity in Gauteng and is quite a bit more of a schlepp getting to the licensing authorities.
That's quite a lot?
Actually, we charge our cost, but if you don't believe us you are welcome to do it yourself - then we will just charge you R399 (R199 for the registration paper + R200 for micro-dotting).
Why do you offer a temporary license plate in Gauteng?
Generally licensing takes quite a bit longer in Gauteng. So, if you are in a hurry to ride your bike we give you 2 options. Ride the bike and license it yourself for R599 (R199 for the registration paper + R200 for micro-dotting + R200 for the temporary license plates). The other option is to ride the bike and we license it for you for R1,399 (R199 for the registration paper + R200 for micro-dotting + R800 for the licensing and number plate + R200 for the temporary license plates).
What is micro-dotting?
This is a new (from September 2012) government enforced security system that we install on your bike. Thousands of tiny dots that have a unique number for your bike will be placed in many different places. This is a big deterrent for criminals - once they see your bike has micro-dot security they are likely to steal someone elses bike!
Can I ride a motor bike with a car drivers license?
Afraid not. It's common practice in the EU to allow people to ride motor bikes with a capacity up to 125cc with a drivers license, but not here, you need a motorcycle license or a motorcycle learners license. This is easy to pass (it is a simple multiple-choice paper) and we have a great training facility which will virtually guarantee that you pass.
If you are over 16 you can ride a bike with a capacity up to 125cc. You can't drink though. When you turn 18 you can ride a bike of any size.
Where do I get my learners license?
At one of the License Testing Centers. You can download the learner's license application form and fill it in before you go to the traffic department. The test is a multiple choice exam and once you have passed you can ride! You have 24 months in which to pass the physical motorcycle test, but you can't carry a passenger.
What do I need to do to get my learners license?
Your ID book (or passport for non-residents) and two photographs. You must present yourself for an eye test.
Can you help me to pass my learners license?
Yes! We have an excellent trainer, Charmaine, who will give you all the training you need and she will take you through a mock exam to make sure that you have everything you need to pass the test. Our training fee including all the material is only R 295.
Why does it take so long to get a booking?
You should call at least three test centres to find the earliest booking - this should be within 8 weeks.
